Founded in 2020 by three young entrepreneurs, Nkhotakota Steadfast was established to strengthen farmers’ purchasing power while creating sustainable economic opportunities for rural communities. What began as a small rice trading venture has grown into a thriving rice processing and market linkage enterprise, helping unlock the potential of Malawi’s rice value chain.
Today, the business works with over 2,000 smallholder farmers, creating reliable market access while investing in value addition that improves incomes, strengthens food systems, and supports inclusive economic growth.
The Growth Accelerator Journey
Support from the Malawi Growth Accelerator enabled Nkhotakota Steadfast to significantly expand its operations. The business invested in modern rice processing machinery and secured a long-term processing facility, allowing it to increase production capacity, improve quality standards, and serve larger commercial markets.
These investments transformed the enterprise from a growing local processor into a trusted supplier capable of meeting the demands of corporate buyers while creating opportunities for thousands of farming households.
Impact
The business has achieved remarkable growth since joining the programme:
- 2,000+ smallholder farmers supported through training, farm inputs, and market access
- 288 farmers engaged under contract farming arrangements
- 14 permanent jobs created, alongside 17 temporary positions and 3 sales agents
- Expanded from serving individual buyers to 8 corporate customers
- Increased annual rice production from 120 tonnes to 230 tonnes—a growth of more than 115%
- Introduced new product lines including brown rice, white rice, and broken rice
- Rice by-products such as rice bran and husks now support other industries, including poultry farming
- Generated over MWK 150 million in annual revenue
Nkhotakota Steadfast continues to expand its processing capacity, strengthen partnerships with farmers, and build resilient agricultural value chains that create lasting economic opportunities across Malawi. By combining entrepreneurship with inclusive market systems, the company is demonstrating how youth-led agribusiness can drive rural transformation.
